Spot deepfakes: your checklist

Fake videos, fake voices, fake photos. They're getting better. So should you.

Thousands of deepfakes are created every day. Politicians saying things they never said. Your face on someone else's body. The technology keeps improving. But you can still spot them. If you know what to look for.

10 ways to spot a deepfake

1

Watch the eyes

Deepfake eyes blink unnaturally. Too little, too much, or at odd moments. Real people blink 15-20 times per minute.

2

Check the face edges

Where the face meets the background you'll often see a blurry edge. Especially at the hairline and ears. Zoom in if you're unsure.

3

Listen to the voice

AI voices miss subtle variations. They sound just a bit too smooth. Compare with older videos of the same person.

4

Teeth and mouth

Deepfakes struggle with teeth. They often look blurry or merge together. Real teeth have individual shapes.

5

Lighting doesn't match

The light on the face doesn't match the rest of the scene. Shadows fall the wrong way. The skin has a different sheen.
